Land Measurement Guide

Measurements in accordance with the New Bihar Survey 2026

Land measurement in Bihar is a very important topic, especially during the ongoing Bihar Survey 2026. If you want to know the correct area of your land, you must understand the traditional measurement methods.

Importance of Lagga (Latthi)

The most basic foundation of land measurement in Bihar is the 'Lagga' or 'Latthi'. Its length varies from district to district:

  • It usually ranges from 4 hands to 9 hands.
  • The most common measurement is the 5.5 hand (8.25 feet) or 6 hand (9 feet) lagga.
  • It is mandatory to know the exact lagga of your district before calculating the area.

The Formula for 1 Dhur

In traditional measurement of Bihar, 'Dhur' is the smallest important unit. The value of 1 Dhur depends on the length of the lagga.

(Lagga x 1.5)2 = Square Feet

Example: If a 6-hand lagga is used in your area:

  • (6 x 1.5) = 9 feet
  • 9 x 9 = 81 Square Feet (i.e. 1 Dhur = 81 square feet)

Standard Conversions

Regardless of the length of the lagga, the relationship between Bigha, Kattha and Dhur in Bihar always remains constant:

  • 20 Dhur = 1 Kattha
  • 20 Kattha = 1 Bigha
  • 400 Dhur = 1 Bigha

1 Dismil Calculation

The use of 'Dismil' is very high in modern measurement and government documents. Remember:

  • 1 Dismil is always 435.6 Square Feet.
  • This value does not change even if the lagga changes.
  • There are 100 Dismils in 1 Acre.
